This presentation provides an overview of railroad event reporting and the role of Railinc's Event Repository in supporting car service, car hire, equipment tracking, and other industry applications. It traces event reporting from the early TRAIN systems through the modern event-processing environment and explains why accurate and timely event data is critical to railroad operations and equipment accounting.
The session follows the lifecycle of an event from receipt through TRAIN II, Event Preprocessors (EPP), Event Posters, and ultimately the Event Repository and Data Warehouse. These reported events create an official industry record and provide information used by multiple downstream systems to determine equipment location, liability, utilization, and appropriate handling.
The presentation demonstrates these dependencies through several important Railinc applications. The Liability Continuity System (LCS) analyzes event history when determining car hire liability; Special Car Order 90 (SCO90) uses location information to update applicable UMLER transportation codes; and Damaged and Defective Car Tracking (DDCT) generates events supporting Car Hire Rules 7 and 8 that are subsequently processed by LCS.
Additional examples include the Car Service Database (CSDB), which uses events to determine equipment location and "Cars on Line" reporting, and Clear Path, which uses timely and accurate information to support coordinated railroad operations in the Chicago terminal. The presentation provides useful background for understanding why event-reporting quality affects numerous downstream railroad systems and business processes.
